How it works

The full-time equivalent scales your part-time pay up in proportion to the hours. If you work half the hours of a full-time role, the FTE pay is double what you earn.

This assumes pay is directly proportional to hours. Benefits, bonuses and paid leave rules can differ between part-time and full-time contracts.

FTE salary = Part-time pay x (Full-time hours / Part-time hours)

Example

30,000 for 20 hours a week against a 40-hour full-time week is a full-time equivalent of 60,000.

Frequently asked questions

What does FTE mean?

Full-time equivalent. It shows what a part-time position would pay if the same hourly pay applied to a full-time schedule.

How many hours is full time?

It varies by employer and country. 40 hours is common in the US, while many European contracts use 35 to 40 hours. Enter the figure for your case.

Why compare through hourly pay?

Annual pay alone hides differences in hours. The hourly rate shows which role pays more for each hour you actually work.

Does this include benefits?

No. Compare benefits such as health cover, pension contributions and paid leave separately, because they can change the real value of an offer.
